Nintendo has always been a little behind when it comes to DLC for their games. Smash Bros. 4 was a step in the right direction on the Wii U and 3DS, but they’ve missed out on a lot of opportunities to deliver in the past few years. Perhaps the Switch will be a different kettle of fish?
Today Nintendo has announced that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for both the Nintendo Switch and Wii U will be getting an Expansion Pass which will grant access to two new sets of DLC for the game as they become available.
The Expansion Pass – which is a first for a main title in The Legend of Zelda series – will be available for purchase as of the 3rd of March, which is launch day for those of you not counting the days, and will cost £17.99.
The first of the two DLC packs will be available in the Summer of this year, with the second being made available towards the end of 2017. Players who purchase the Expansion Pass will have immediate access to three new chests which will spawn in the Great Plateau area of the game. One of these chests will contain a unique shirt adorned with the Switch logo for Link to wear in-game and is exclusive to the Expansion Pass.
The first content pack will include the addition of a Cave of Trials, a new Hard Mode as well as a currently undisclosed new feature for the in-game map. The second DLC pack will include a new dungeon, new challenges as well as a new original story. It’s worth noting that Nintendo has advised that these packs cannot be purchased separately.
“The world of Hyrule, which we created for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is so large and vibrant that we wanted to offer more for players to experience within it,” said Nintendo developer Eiji Aonuma, the long-time producer of the series. “With this new Expansion Pass, we hope that fans will play, explore and enjoy the game even more.”
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is out on the 3rd of March for both the Nintendo Switch and Wii U to coincide with the launch for the Switch, which at the time of posting is only 17 days away! Will you be picking up the Expansion Pass? Let us know in the comments below.
