Walmart E3 Leak Review

With this year’s E3 in the rear view mirror, I thought it’d be an interesting exercise to analyse the Walmart Canada leak and see just how right they were, as well as how many spoilers they managed to give away.

For those unfamiliar with the leak, in May this year retail giant Walmart’s Canadian online site released a listing page on their website of what appeared to be a number of as yet unannounced video games. Images of the web-page were captured and analysed as a marker against what we all could expect to see at this year’s E3 event in Los Angeles. Of the twenty five games listed on the page, discounting the five miscellaneous titles with images and games/DLC that had already been announced at previous events, there were still eight games that had yet to be unveiled that aren’t yearly entries (NBA 2K19 and WWE 2K19).

In the weeks leading up to E3, three of these games were revealed or leaked, though whether or not this was a case of damage limitation is unknown. Bethesda released a teaser trailer for Rage 2 on 14th May, Warner Bros Interactive released an announcement trailer for LEGO DC Super-Villains on 30th May and the official name and setting of the next Assassins Creed game was revealed when a photo of a promotional keychain was sent to French site JeuxVideoLive on 31st May, revealing a Greek setting titled Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

The pre-E3 announcements whittled the list down to just five unannounced titles:

  • Borderlands 3 (PS4/Xbox One)
  • Forza Horizon (Xbox One)
  • Gears of War (Xbox One)
  • Just Cause 4 (PS4/Xbox One)
  • Splinter Cell (PS4/Xbox One)

Of these final five games, three were revealed during E3 weekend – Forza Horizon 4, Gears 5 and Just Cause 4. So, of the initial eight unannounced games on Walmart’s webpage, three quarters were actually correct. Not a bad success rate, though I’m undecided as to whether this heightened my anticipation of seeing some of the games, or dampened my spirits when games went unannounced.
