Nintendo Confirms Not All Games Will Support Cloud Saves

With Cloud Saves around the corner with the release of Nintendo’s Online Service for the Switch, the company has recently confirmed that not all titles will support the highly anticipated feature. And that’s from a first party perspective.

In a statement to Game Informer, the Big N has confirmed that some of their biggest titles will not have the feature enabled, this includes Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee and Pikachu and Splatoon 2. Further to this, even some third party titles will not be able to take advantage of the backup system; such as Dark Souls Remastered, NBA 2K19, Dead Cells and FIFA 19.

Nintendo has advised this is to prevent players from gaining an unfair advantage. For example, by trading away a Pokemon and then restoring the save from the cloud. Nintendo’s reply to Game Informer can be seen below.

“The vast majority of Nintendo Switch games will support Save Data Cloud backup. However, in certain games, this feature would make it possible to, for example, regain items that had been traded to other players, or revert to a higher online multiplayer ranking that had been lost. To ensure fair play, Save Data Cloud backup may not be enabled for such games. To ensure that Save Data Cloud backups cannot be used to unfairly affect online multiplayer rankings, the feature will not be enabled in Splatoon 2.”

While I can see their point of view, like many, I’m a little annoyed. Will this cause a number of gamers to look towards homebrew options to back up their saves? Will Nintendo be smarter with their online games in the future to prevent this issue? Saving a player’s details online in Splatoon 2, as an example, would solve this problem.
