In a historic announcement made today, Sony has confirmed that they will be allowing cross-platform play between the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

Being enabled first in an open beta of popular battle royale title Fortnite, it marks the first time that players on any console can truly play together, regardless of their platform of choice!

In the past, Sony has remained resolute in their stance against cross-platform play, but it would seem that due to pressure from gaming professionals and fans alike the tech giant is beginning to change their stance on the subject. In a blog post on the Official PlayStation Blog President and Global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment John Kodera said:

Following a comprehensive evaluation process, SIE has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content. We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution.

He continued to acknowledge that gaming isn’t the same as it used to be, with communities evolving for some games “to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players”.

The beta for cross-platform Fortnite begins today; hopefully, this will also fix the issue some Switch users were having where they were prevented from playing on Nintendo’s system had they previously played on the PlayStation 4.
